Does your gas fired Heating unit need attention?
Some are 20 years old or more and you may think because it is old it is time to replace it
If it needs attention chances are it can be repaired at a relatively cheap rate as most parts are still available.
The newer ones are more efficient in runnning but because they are computerised when they break down they can be very expensive in parts
I have found many times that a plumber has looked at an old Wall Furnace heating unit and said it is old and you would be better with a new one. I have asked the client what did he do to arrive at that solution. Nothing, he just stood there and looked at it
That is quite a common answer. For about $1200 plus you can buy a new one then removal and installation on top of that.
For about $600.00 (worst case) you can have your old heater brought right up to scratch, The dearest part is the fan and most plumbers are putting in reconditioned fans which have a new motor.
Southern Heating
These were built around the 1980's and are similar to Atlas Webster and Gasglo. Some are horizontal with others vertical and some with a separate motor driving the impeller by pulley belt(s) . When working on these (or any other unit) always replace the thermocouple, clean the pilot light flame guard and injector and always leave with a nice large pilot flame. If flame is not soft there might be some grit still on the injector which causes it to burn hard and noisy. Make sure Pilot flame is burning on the top 10 mils (3/8") Thermocouple should be quite firm in gas valve not over tightened

I have found this a few times now and it makes you look incompetent. I think the gas control valve is becoming faulty even though I have adjusted and cleaned the Pilot flame again. If I am called back a second time I suggest that the gas control valve be replaced with another valve. The original valve type is no longer available so a Retro fit valve is required. You will most likely find that this solves your problem. It is cheaper than a new CHU installed

I set this business up about 10 years ago specifically to do small jobs that would take up to 3/4 hours. I had asked around various plumbers and others not long after I started and had a negative response. I advertised in various ways to no avail and spent a very large amount of time doing nothing. I also advertised through a lot of companies who promised the world took your money and gave almost a nil return for it. This was happening about the time mobile phones were coming in big time and computers with access to the internet .
I also spent a very large amount of time sitting at home and not producing any work.
After a while I decided to specialise in Gas and gas appliance repairs. This led to Gas Central Heating repairs but I had a lot of difficulty in learning them as there were very few courses on them. I persevered asking for information from various suppliers. This information was not forthcoming so I worked many hours for nothing learning as much as I could. I located some old Gas & Fuel repair manuals from a Gas Parts supplier and received a lot of help through them and eventually started to make contact with people who could and did help me. I have quite a few contacts now for advice on repairs. There are a few classes around now that you can enroll in but I find it is a bit late for me as I have passed retiring age. However, I have now gained a very large amount of knowledge of which I am proud of and have guys coming to me now asking if I can help them which I do. I have progressed into Evaporated Cooler repairs which I find quite good for the summer. I do a lot of small plumbing jobs such as tap washers, repairs to appliances, Nat Gas connections, burst pipes, leaking gas pipes, change over Hot water units in fact almost anything in Plumbing that I can do on the ground and only takes a few hours to do. I do get a lot of slack time which suits me. I have also done a few Solar Hot water installations and repair them. I subcontract to one company which I class as bread and butter to me and have a lot of my own advertising in place. Now a days I am never with out work. When the first snap of cold weather comes I become extremely busy and it is not unusual to go through 8 plus houses in one day but it is a long day. This may last for 2/3 months or more depending on the weather. Most of my work is in the Macedon Ranges area including Riddells Creek, Gisborne, Macedon, Melton, Bacchus Marsh, Sunbury with others to Hillside, Bulla, Niddrie, Wallan. I have also been as far as Castlemaine, Werribee, Whittlesea, Montrose and Clunes with a lot of other places in between.
I think my business is set up quite well now and would be ideal for a plumber who wants to be self employed as all the ground work has been done and he would be going into a very good business that has a very large possibility to succeed extremely well if he was to run it the right way. If I was about 20 years younger I would not be selling as I believe the openings are there to succeed very comfortably.
I also offer a good amount of back up for the successful purchaser as I think it would be very necessary for them
